The training to be a volunteer in Latin America

2007/11/15, Loren
Hello Maximiliano, i emailed you a while ago asking about volunteering and this is the response i got (below). I now have my dates set for the time i'll be in south america, and would like to volunteer for at least 3 weeks during the end of feb start of march (say from feb 25th onwards) I was wondering if you could recommend which communities you think would be best for me to teach in the local school, i think i would prefer to stay in one place so i could settle in a bit and get to know people. I am keen to be involved in any other ways that the comminity might need, but to teach english as well would be excellent. The reviews of Chiquilpa and Mushullakta look quite interesting, but what do you think? Could you please send me more information on possible communities and how i would go about arranging to go there, payment and what the new fees are etc.
Thanks for your help
Ciao
Dear Loren

Loren Dear Loren: The next year we have the prices in euros ( the dollar devaluation is the problem): Registration, 50 euros and 10 euros per day (2 in Quito an 8 in the communities), it means the same price than 3 years ago. Spanish classes and training classes 5 euros per hour/person. Accommodation in Quito 5 euros/day.You could to work in the Andes (Baldalupaxi) and the Amazonian Region ( Morona River) because at the coast and Galapagaos are vacations. You can´t work in Chiguilpe (vacations ) We don´t work more in Mushullacta with volunteers, only with tourist. Our main objetive the next year will be to build the bio-ethnocultural Corridor Galapagos-Rio Amazonas by the Morona River. You work would be to teach English to protect the nature and ancient cultures.
You need an special training in Quito, in this time would learn Spanish, if you have basic level, and practice how to teach English to protect the native cultures and the nature, and to how to write an interesting and useful report by Internet in our weblogs. The training classes are necessary because in the Latinamerican countries the environment and the social problems are more complicated, there are more risks for the travelers, and the traditional volunteer work becomes fruitless. Best regards
Maximiliano
